Syllabus  - 1 & 2 Thessalonians 

Instructor: Toney L. Smith

I. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 

We will conduct our studies from the King James Version of the Bible. This will insure conformity in our word studies and reading assignments. From time to time we will compare this text with the American Standard Version of 1901. 
It is imperative that you read the assigned text for each class session prior to coming into the study. 

II. SUGGESTED READING: 

You will need to obtain a copy of  First and Second Thessalonians by Bob Winton.  Also I recommend the 1988 Denton Lectureship book.


III. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS: 

You will be required to outline each chapter of First and Second Thessalonians. (I will provide a standard outline form for this work. These outlines are to be turned in by Monday, 8 A.M. following the Saturday class time.) 
You will also be given a short test following each session and the answers are due by 8 A. M. on Monday following our Saturday class time.

IV. DATES AND TIME FOR SEMESTER STUDIES:

Our semester studies begin on the first Saturday in August. There will be a break on the Saturday of the third full week in September and the Saturday following Thanksgiving. Final class is the third Saturday in December. Our class time will be 50 minutes in duration beginning at 3 PM CTZ.

V. SCHEDULE FOR THE STUDY: 

 
1. Lesson 1: Introduction and background for the book. (1 Thessalonians 1:1)
  2. Lesson 2: 1 Thessalonians 1:2-10 (Outline of chapter 1 is due by Monday.)
  3. Lesson 3: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-13 
  4. Lesson 4: 1 Thessalonians 2:14-20 (Outline of chapter 2 is due by Monday.)
  5. Lesson 5: 1 Thessalonians 3:1-13 (Outline of chapter 3 is due by Monday.)
  6. Lesson 6: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8
  7. Lesson 7: 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
  8. Lesson 8: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (Outline of chapter 4 is due by Monday.)
  9. Lesson 9: 1 Thessalonians. 5:1-11
10. Lesson 10: 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
11. Lesson 11: 1 Thessalonians 5:14-18
12. Lesson 12: 1 Thessalonians 5:19-28 (Outline of chapter 5 is due by Monday.)
13. Lesson 13: Introduction to 2nd Thessalonians. (2 Thessalonians 1:1-7) 
14. Lesson 14: 2 Thessalonians 1:7-12 (Outline of chapter 1 is due by Monday.)
15. Lesson 15: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12
16. Lesson 16: 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 (Outline of chapter 2 is due by Monday.)
17. Lesson 17: 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5

VI. TESTS: 

There will be pop tests from time to time at the end of our classroom sessions. These are to be answered and sent as soon as the class is ended. At the end of Lesson 18 we will have a final exam. The answers for the final exam are to be turned in by 8 A. M. on Monday following our last Saturday class time. 
Points will be deducted for all late assignments.

                                       ACTS 2
                           DAY OF PENTECOST

INTRODUCTION:
   A. The apostles were assembled at the right place at the right time. (Luke 24:46-49)
   B. Pentecost was observed on the 50th day following the Passover Feast. (Leviticus 23:10-11, 15)
   C. This establishment of the church in this chapter is the fulfillment of Joel 2; Daniel 2; and Isaiah 2.

DISCUSSION: FROM CHAPTER 2 WE OBSERVE…
I. THE POWER. (1-13)
   A. The apostles were filled with the Holy Ghost. (1-4)
   B. The tongues were natural languages. (2:4, 6, 8, 11; Mark 16:17)
   C. The power was given to confirm the word. (Mark 16:20)
   D. The reaction from the multitude. (5-13)

II. THE PREACHING. (14-40)
   A. Refuting error. (14-21)
   B. Peter reminds them of the miracles and signs of Jesus. (22-24)
   C. Jesus saw no corruption. (25-28; Psalm 16:8-11)
   D. Thus Christ is superior to King David. (29-36)
   E. Some of the hearers were moved to ask what they must do to be saved. (37)
   F. The answer was to repent and be baptized. (38-40)

III. THE PRODUCT. (41-47)
   A. The reception and action. (41)
   B. They continued to follow the apostles teachings. (42; Matthew 28:20)
   C. The obedient had a change is attitudes. (43-45)
   D. The results. (46-47) The church of Christ is established. (Matthew 16:18-19)

IV. CONCLUSION:
   A. The saved are to be found in the church established on this day of Pentecost.
   B. Christ is the Savior of His body, which is the church. (Ephesians 4:4; 1:22-23;
        Colossians 1:18, 24; Ephesians 5:23)
