“THE FATHER SEEKETH SUCH TO
WORSHIP HIM”
John 4:23, 24
I. The Object--God.
A. God is the object of our worship.
B. He is the only audience of our worship.
II. The Obligations--worship in spirit and in truth.
A. Jesus said that we “must” worship God.
B. We must worship God in a certain way; not just any way
will do.
1. Some people assume that God is pleased with that
which pleases man.
2. Others are of the opinion that God will accept anything
in worship as long as the worshipper is sincere.
C. We must worship God with the right attitude and according
the proper standard (see John 17:17).
III. The Obstacles--self.
A. The word “I” is in the middle of the words “pride” and
“sin.”
B. A deep focus on oneself is the foundation of unacceptable
worship.
1. Colossians 2:23
2. Genesis 4:1-9
IV. The Objective--to please God.
A. The goal of worship is to please God, not self.
B. Those who mechanically go through the motions of
worship hoping to “get something out of it” have it
backwards.
C. Only when we put a lot of heart and effort into our worship
will we ever get something out of it.
