HELPING THE NEXT GENERATION

Psalm 78:1-8

Introduction

1. Each generation guides the one that follows.

2. We should feel a responsibility to help those who follow us.

3. We have been helped by previous generations.

4. What are we doing for those who will follow us?

I. Remember the Truth (vv. 1-3)

A. It all starts with knowing God’s Way.

B. This Psalmist calls to remembrance old sayings.

C. Note the practices of Paul and Peter.

1. 1 Timothy 4:6

2. 2 Peter 1:13; 3:1

D. Preachers are not supposed to preach anything new, and

Christians should not believe or practice anything new.

E. How much like the Athenians are we (Acts 17:21)?

II. Reveal the Truth (vv. 4-6)

A. The reason for revealing the truth is stated in the first part

of verse 6.

B. The allegiance to God in others is often the result of our

own love of the truth (1 Jn. 1:1-4).

C. A short fall in allegiance to Christ may reflect a fall out in

the way we have presented/lived the truth.

III. Results of the Truth (v. 6-8)

A. The truth spawns hope.

B. The truth stirs hearts.

C. The truth promotes a steadfast spirit.
