CONQUERING MODERN-DAY JERICHOS

Joshua 6

Introduction

1.  The “straitly shut up” city of Jericho must have seemed

impossible to conquer especially in view of God’s prescribed

     method of attack.

2.  There are modern-day tasks that God has given us that may also

seem impossible, but they can be conquered by following the

     example found in Joshua 6.

  I.  Hear (vv. 2-5)

       A.  God was very specific in telling Joshua how to conquer

             Jericho.

             1.  Many today assume that God does not have clear,

specific desires and will accept anything that is offered

to Him.  This assumption is the root cause of liberalism.

             2.  God is a God of precise order (Heb. 8:5; Exod. 25:40;

                  1 Cor. 14:40).

       B.  As Joshua heard the unconventional battle plans for

conquering the city, he might have been tempted to ignore

             such strange instructions.

 II.  Believe (vv. 6-15)

       A.  As Joshua explained God’s desires to Israel, he may have

been tempted to express doubt that the plan would ever

             work.

       B.  The message of a lot of people today is:  “This is what

God said to do, but it will never work.”

III.  Obey (vv. 16-20)

        A.  Israel’s true test was in carrying out God’s orders.

        B.  God demands full obedience and will accept nothing less.
