POTS THAT WON’T HOLD WATER

Jeremiah 2:13

Introduction

Few things are more worthless than a broken pot, yet that is how
God described His people.  Let’s notice their misdirected trust.

  I.  Man-made gods (Jer. 16:20)

       A.  Israel had a fetish for false gods.

       B.  Israel’s idolatry started soon after God condemned it

             (Exod. 20:3-5; 32:1-7).

       C.  In many cases, Israel borrowed idolatry from the

             surrounding nations.

       D.  Today, God’s people are borrowing falsehoods from the

             surrounding denominations.

 II.  Man-made might

       A.  Israel trusted in their army and alliances that were made

with surrounding nations (Jer. 37:5-10) to protect them.

       B.  God had demonstrated His might (2 Kings 19:35, 36;

             Jos. 6:1ff).

       C.  Any power to which one may turn other than that which

comes from God is inferior (apply Rom. 1:16).

III.  Man-made relationships (Jer. 17:5)

       A.  Israel trusted in man rather than God.

       B.  Councils, conferences, and the like place trust in men

             rather than God.

IV.  Man-made wealth

       A.  Israel inhabited a fruitful land and may have believed their

             resources could save them.

       B.  We own nothing that has not been given to us by God.
