Sunday’s Sermon Sketches

February 2, 2003 (a.m.)

PSALM 1

  I.  Faithful Living (vv. 1, 2)

       A.  This opening pair of verses outlines characteristics

             of the faithful.

       B.  The faithful DO delight in God’s law, and they DO

meditate on it day and night.

             1.  Notice how God’s law is sufficient for the

faithful who do not reason that “the grass is

                  greener on the other side.”

             2.  Today a lot of Christians have stopped

delighting in God’s law, and they have started to

delight in the ways of denominations (see

                  1 Samuel 8:5).

             3.  Also note that the faithful do their own study

and do not depend on others.

       C.  The faithful DO NOT play games with sin.

             1.  Many have noted the progression into sin:  first,

someone walks by sin; then, one stops and

stands to view sin; then, one sits down and gets

                  comfortable with sin.

              2.  Sin is a serious matter not to be taken lightly.

 II.  Fruitful Living (v. 3)

       A.  God demands fruitfulness and will not tolerate

             fruitlessness (Matt. 21:19, 20).

       B.  We will only bear fruit in Jesus (Jn. 15:1-6).

III.  Fatal Living (vv. 4-6)

       A.  Spiritual death is described in verse 6.

       B.  The ungodly are out of control--driving down a hill

to a bridge that is out!
