General Epistles
Instructor: Rick Popejoy
Syllabus updated 12/2/23
PURPOSE:
The purpose of our class is to help all who enroll to obtain more knowledge of God's word, especially the General Epistles; to obtain a higher level of service and to grow spiritually. We trust that each student will work toward the end of applying all learned in service because knowledge without use is worse than useless; it is a crime against God and Christ and a detriment to their Cause.
We want all who attend to enjoy their study, but at the same time remember it is for a serious purpose we meet. Students should feel free to ask for help when necessary but should first exhaust their capacity to solve the problem before asking.

TEXTBOOKS:
The King James Bible
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Students must be in class on time. Absences must be excused by the director of OABS or they will count against the final grade. Habitual tardiness and/or absences reflect a careless, indifferent attitude toward the subject matter wherein the student should examine his priorities to see if he is ready to take such a course.
EXAMS, ASSIGNMENTS & COURSE GRADING:
There will be nine exams during this semester. One at the beginning of the semester and one at the end, and one examination before each book is studied. Exams will account for 18% of the final grade. The primary purpose of the exams is to gauge your knowledge and understanding of the material before studied and then to compare that knowledge and understanding against the final exam.
There is a total of 36 memory verses during this semester, one verse per class. Memory work will account for 20% of the final grade.
Your reading work will consist of reading through the General Epistles once each week that we are in class. Yes, that is 18 times. It will take you approximately 1.07 minutes to read the General Epistles. Reading work will account for 30% of the final grade. Here is the breakdown: James (16 minutes); 1 Peter (16 minutes); 2 Peter (11 minutes); 1 John (16 minutes); 2 John (2 minutes); 3 John (2 minutes); Jude (4 minutes).
You are to prepare A Handbook for the General Epistles. This Handbook is to consist of the following items: (1) An outline for each book within the General Epistles. (2) Your personal notes for each class. (3) Three pages for each chapter in each book. On each of the three pages you will have the following heading:
EXEGETICAL CONSIDERATIONS: James Chapter One
In this section words are to be considered as to definition, use in sentences, et cetera.
THEOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS: James Chapter One
This section considers Scripture in their immediate context (surrounding verses), intermediate context (the book itself) and the remote context (whatever else the Bible says on the same subject under consideration). Moreover, the student must contemplate the importance of the text being studied in contributing to Bible knowledge on any given subject.
HOMILETICAL APPLICATIONS: James Chapter One
In this section you are to extend effort toward developing expository outlines and other homilies from the chapter.
Your Handbook work will account for 40% of the final grade.
